A History of the Moped and Scooter

Is it a scooter or a moped? That is the question. The truth is that the terms are nearly interchangeable. Many vehicles are both a moped and a scooter. When mopeds were first developed, they were different from scooters because mopeds had pedals that were used to start them. One started a moped by pedaling until the engine activated. Similar to rolling start of a manual transmission car. Today, the definition of a moped has more to do with the local regulations concerning the maximum speed of the moped and the size of its engine. In most places, a moped may not go faster than thirty miles per hour. There are still places throughout the world that still define a moped as "scooter" with pedals.

Whether a vehicle is defined as a moped or a scooter, most have an engine size under 50cc. Naturally, the smaller wheel size of scooters, as compared to a motorcycle, enable better steering and handling. It is also very easy to change the smaller tire of a moped or scooter. Unfortunately, an engine size under 50cc does not always mean the moped or scooter has as much power as a larger engine. The larger engine will be better able to accelerate when necessary and keep up with faster moving traffic.

At Aloha Moped Rentals, we carry both scooters with a less than 50cc engine and scooters with greater than 50cc engines. Just let us know which you prefer.
